Associate

Position: Associate

About the Position

Working on the Monitoring team and reporting to the Senior Associate, the Associate will support the development and implementation of the organization’s oversight activities in partnership with CANY staff and leadership. This role presents an exciting opportunity for an ambitious professional with prior experience in program management, stakeholder engagement, and/or direct services. The Associate will support the organization’s activities to provide meaningful oversight of New York’s state prisons and advance key reform issues, including prison-based healthcare, decarceration strategies, and governmental transparency and accountability.

  • Specific areas of responsibility will include:

    • Supporting CANY’s day-to-day operations through development and management of administrative systems, including planning and coordinating prison monitoring visits.

    • Preparing and tracking mailings in response to letters and other communication from incarcerated persons, family members and loved ones of incarcerated persons, and other stakeholders.

    • Answering “hotline” calls during assigned weeks and documenting issues raised.

    • Developing processes and procedures for responding to various communications from incarcerated persons, family members and loved ones of incarcerated persons

    • Configuring and maintaining Salesforce database of contacts and communications as well as regular reporting.

    • Data entry and processing of surveys, monitoring observations, and more

    • Facilitating communication with volunteers before, during, and after monitoring visits to include recruiting, vetting, training, and orienting volunteers

    • Maintaining systems for filing, storing, and inventorying all monitoring materials.

    • Assisting with the dissemination of findings from monitoring visits and surveys by assisting with the creation of briefing documents, fact sheets, and data tabulations.  

    • Coordinating programmatic activities and providing administrative support for internship progams

    • Support the work of other staff and interns.

    • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned. 

  • CANY is seeking an enthusiastic candidate comfortable working across a variety of functions as part of a small, collaborative, hard-working team. Individuals who possess the following skills, attributes, and qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

    • Minimum educational requirement is some college level coursework, preference for a bachelor’s degree in public health, sociology, social work, criminology, psychology, public policy, or other relevant field.

    • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills, strong interpersonal and oral communication skills, and ability to multi-task.

    • Strong administrative skills, including confidence using Microsoft Office, project management tools, customer relationship management systems (e.g. Salesforce, a plus), and other relevant industry software.

    • Ability to articulate a clear and compelling connection to and knowledge of criminal justice reform, with a strong preference for prior experience working on issues related to New York State prisons.

    • At least two years of prior work experience, which may be substituted for a relevant combination of education and/or life experience.

    • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people in a variety of professional settings and situations.

  • The annual salary range for this position is $65,000-75,000, depending on skills, experience, and level of education. Senior Analyst

The senior analyst will be a part of the Monitoring team at CANY and will report directly to the Senior Director. The ideal candidate will have familiarity with the criminal justice system either as a part of their education or experience. The Senior Analyst will support the organization’s activities to provide meaningful oversight of New York’s state prisons and advance key reform issues, including prison-based healthcare, decarceration strategies, and governmental transparency and accountability

    • Author reports, research activities, data analysis, and leverage quantitative data for context and impact.

    • Design qualitative analysis tools and protocols for information collected during prison visits.

    • Design a systemic analysis of prison standards to make actionable recommendations regarding statewide oversight of New York Prisons.

    • Develop survey instruments, data collection tools, and training materials for colleagues to collect consistent data from prison records, including logbooks, memos, and other forms.

    • Develop internal trackers (systems) to assist in cross-facility analysis and identification of trends, issues, and concerns and CANY recommendations. Responsible for cleaning and streamlining data.

    • Work with colleagues to identify, prioritize and implement key indicators for oversight of prisons and to set and advance advocacy goals.

  • CANY is seeking an enthusiastic candidate comfortable working across a variety of functions as part of a small, hard-working team. Individuals who possess the following skills, attributes, and qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

    • Advance degree (Masters, Professional, or Doctorate) in a related field required.

    • At least five years of relevant prior professional experience, which may be substituted for relevant combination of education and / or life experience.

    • Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

    • Strong administrative skills including confidence using Microsoft Office, database programs (ex. Salesforce, Microsoft Power Bi) and other relevant industry software.

    • Experience using programming language for data manipulation & analysis. SQL is required.

    • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills, strong interpersonal and oral communication skills, and ability to multi-task.

    • Knowledge of or familiarity with the criminal justice system, with a preference for experience in New York.

  • The annual salary range for this position is $85,000-100,000, depending on skills, experience, and level of education. Data Analyst

About the Position

The analyst will be a part of the newly established data team at CANY and will report directly to the Director who leads CANY’s data strategy. The ideal candidate will have familiarity with the criminal justice system (either as a part of their education or experience), experience with SQL and an analytical programming language (Python preferred), and experience with a data visualization tool (PowerBI).

The data team has three primary objectives which contribute to CANYs mission and vision as a whole:

  1. To improve our ability to identify issues in the prison system using data.

  2. To inform and fortify reports with robust data and visualizations.

  3. To draw public attention to key issues using data & visualizations on CANYs platforms and beyond. 

As a team, we are in a moment of growth and change and are seeking a candidate that is excited to be a part of building the foundation for something new. This means that the analyst will have the opportunity to investigate and learn how to use new data and analytics tools, work closely with the research team to define and visualize key metrics, and contribute to the organization’s research agenda.

  • The analyst will own the following areas:

    • Quantitative analysis: The analyst will be responsible for fulfilling analytics requests, both internal and external to the organization. This could include any number of requests – for example, calculating responses to surveys we administer or analyzing the changing prison population using data from the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). Analysis will normally require data processing in SQL and Python/R.

    • Data visualization & reporting: The analyst will design and build visualizations to (1) show the results of their analysis and/or (2) build dashboards which demonstrate comparative and time-based trends in the data we collect. The analyst will work with closely with the research team and other Directors to determine which metrics to include in reports and dashboards. Most of the visualizations will be used in external-facing reports and dashboards, so in addition to being effective and easy to understand, their appearance is important.

    The analyst will act as an advisor or helper in the following areas:

    • Data collection: CANY gets data from many different sources, both online and offline, and manages a variety of data formats. The analyst will support the Director in ensuring we receive the data we expect on-schedule, in the correct format, and with the right data points.

    • Data entry: Some of the data we collect comes in file formats not suited for analysis (including offline data, PDF files, and image files). The analyst will support in the data digitization process where manual data entry is impractical, using the tools we’ve identified to transform the data into a more useful format (e.g., SnapSurvey, Azure FormRecognizer.)

    • Tool selection: The team is growing in capacity rapidly and is still in the process of choosing which tools to use for a range of data functions; the analyst will have the opportunity to research and assess the usefulness of different tools.

    • Data transparency: The analyst will support the effort to make key data and visualizations available on CANY platforms, including the CANY website.
